I don't know much about the site, but I agree it looks interesting. originally the essay appeared in Essays in Philosophy one of the main online philosophy journals. I guess this site picked it up.

we'll have to get together in real life sometime soon.

See you in class this afternoon..???

Wow. That was a very interesting and in-depth article, with much to mull over. I found the print ad (literally animal "print" ad :) to be really interesting. Thanks for sharing Anne. What is that "site" & who sponsors it? I didn't get a chance to study it thoroughly but it looked like it had some quite a few thought-provoking articles/topics.

I know body image is one of your topics & would love to discuss this more with you. It's funny how a simple "suppose to perk you up" email actually caused me to delve in deeper to this troubling issue.

I googled "eating disorder statistics." Of course there are many different sources with very troubling numbers and trends. Just take a look at these:

Statistics from Body Wars: Making Peace with Women's Bodies
Source: Body Wars: Making Peace with Women’s Bodies,
by Margo Maine, Ph.D., Gürze Books, 2000

· 42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner
· 45% of boys and girls in grades 3-6 want to be thinner
· 37% have already dieted
· 6.9% score in the ED range
· 51% of 9-10 year old girls feel better about selves when dieting
· 9% of 9 year old have vomited to lose weight
· 81% of 10 year old are afraid of being fat
· 53% of 13 year old girls are unhappy with their bodies
· 78% of 18 year old girls are unhappy with their bodies
· The #1 wish of girls 11-17 years old is to lose weight
